Juicy with a touch of sweetness, the Blueberry is the most recent wild
fruit to become cultivated. Buleberries are native to North America, the
interest in and popularity of the fruit has spread globally.
Origins:
Historically,
blueberries were an important component of the Aboriginal Tribes (First
Nations) throughout North America, using the delicious berries fresh and
dried in stews, puddings, preserved meat, and pemmican. Blueberries
were first cultivated in the 1920's in New Jersey. Here in Canada, we
celebrate National Blueberry Month each July!
Botanical:
Blueberries come in
deciduous or evergreen varieties. All have similar oval or lance-shaped
leaves and white or cream coloured, urn-shaped flowers. Blueberry season
runs from late spring through summer where the wonderful clusters of
blueberries are plentiful. Cultivated blueberries tend to be larger, but
the wild ones pack a more intense flavour and colour to match! There
are 3 main types of blueberries: Highbush - main cultivated species,
growing to 2 m (7 ft) high; Rabbiteye - Larger berries with more seeds,
found mainly in the southeastern US; and Lowbush - small shrubs, growing
to 30 cm (12 in) high. An interesting about Lowbush Blueberries is,
they are the first plants to grow back after a wildfire.
